MyLanguageLabs.com is the gateway to Pearson’s highly successful online learning and assessment systems for basic language courses. This convenient, easily navigable site offers a wide array of language-learning tools and resources designed for the unique needs of the language instructor and student.
Personalized Learning
In MyLanguageLabs, students are recognized as individuals with individual learning needs. For example:
Readiness Checks: At the beginning of each chapter, students may answer questions covering several English grammar concepts necessary for understanding the target-language grammar in that chapter. If the Readiness Check results indicate they need help on a specific topic, they are referred to appropriate English grammar tutorials for the instruction they need.
English and Target-Language Grammar Tutorials: Over 200 short, animated tutorials teach students the English grammar they need in order to understand the target-language grammar covered in the text as well as target-language tutorials that can be used to teach or review the target-language grammar topics covered in the course.
Multilayered Feedback and Point-of-Need Support: As students complete self-scoring activities, they are provided with point-of-need support in three layers. After an activity is submitted for grading, feedback bubbles provide hints on why an answer is incorrect. When students try the activity again, the “Need help?” feature appears with links to specific sections in the eBook and additional resources directly related to the concept they are practicing in the activity.
The system defaults to allow students to see the correct answer on their third attempt, but the flexibility of MyLanguageLabs allows you to change that, and many other settings, if you wish. The language resource tool bar also provides links to grammar tutorials, the eBook, an audio glossary and interactive verb chart that will help students work through the online activities.
Oral Practice
With MyLanguageLabs, students are able to increase their oral proficiency without leaving the online environment. For example:
Voice Recording: Students can record their voices in response to oral activities that appear in either the Student Activities Manual or the Additional Practice folders.
Audio Feedback: Instructors can access any or all of the students' recorded audio directly from the course Gradebook, then listen, enter a grade, make comments in writing, or record a response in return.
Online Oral Communication Tools: Students can engage in asynchronous online communication with their classmates or instructors via discussion activities.
Wimba Pronto: Bring live, synchronous voice and written chat to your online environment (with webcam video capabilities). Instructors can opt to have Wimba Pronto enabled in their MyLanguageLab course at no additional charge. This online, class-roster-based instant messaging system designed specifically for education also offers queued chat functionality for office hours, student-to-student learning for group projects, group chats, application sharing, and more.
Instructor Tools Adapted to Language Teaching
MyLanguageLabs provides powerful, easy-to-use instructor tools that have been specifically developed to address the needs of language teaching:
Use "as is" or make it your own! Default Preferences make it possible for instructors to use MyLanguageLabs "as is," so that course set up is fast and easy. But a clearly designed Preferences panel allows individual instructors to tailor the course to meet their specific needs. For example, an instructor can determine that answers with missing or incorrect accent marks will receive half credit, rather than the entire response being graded as incorrect.
Ability to edit and grade open-ended questions: In addition to grading student answers to open-ended questions, instructors can insert comments or common error codes and make corrections. Then, with one click, they can make their feedback available to the student. They may also comment orally through the voice recording feature.
Customizable gradebook: Instructors can add columns to their gradebook and organize them any way they wish. For example, an instructor could add columns for class participation and special projects, then weight the columns in accordance with the course grading policy. The result? The MyLanguageLabs gradebook can be the only gradebook instructors need to maintain for their course.
